About Us

The History

The year is 1648, Cromwell and his Parliamentarians have just chased a Scottish army of Royalists from Preston down to Warrington Bridge, were they finally surrendered. During the battle there was much fighting in the Parish Church area, which still shows its battle scars to this day.

The Cottage Restaurant BuildingVictorious, Cromwell addresses both his troops and his Scottish prisoners on Pyghill (an area off Horsemarket Street), before sending the Scottish Royalists home along a lane which is still called Scotland Road. Afterwards Cromwell lodges for the night in Church Street.

The old part of this restaurant, known as Tudor Cottage is one of Warrington's oldest and most recognised buildings, made famous by Oliver Cromwell staying in it in 1648, and has been classified as a Grade II listed building. As such, we have made every effort to ensure the restoration and renovation of the building retains much of the building's original character and fittings. You can see this most clearly in the magnificent roof beams and oak panelling throughout the reception and lounge/bar areas of the restaurant.

You are sitting in a truly historic building!

The Cottage's Restoration

The Cottage Restaurant InteriorOur aim was to create a whole new dining experience what better place to create it than in one of the oldest and well known buildings in warrington. For years The Cottage was left in ruins and disrepair, in creating our restaurant we bought life back into the derelict building. The Tudor Cottage needed a lot of delicate restoration as it is a grade 2 listed building all the work carried out ont the building had to be approved by the National Heritage.

For those who have dined at The Cottage you will see how the building has been tastefully restored to resemble as much of its former beauty as possible..............
